We are excited to announce Empathy as our Partner of the Week, where we highlight one of our unique PlanSource Marketplace Partners and the value they bring to the benefits industry. We recently sat down to discuss their unique employee benefits and how they support lifestyle planning and health within the benefits industry.

What makes your company unique in the benefits space – what key benefits do you provide to employees?

Employees who experience loss carry huge emotional and logistical burdens, impacting their work and their workplaces. Combining sophisticated technology and personal support, Empathy is a comprehensive bereavement solution built to give them the support they need.

Empathy helps with everything from planning a funeral to settling a loved one’s affairs—using personalized, step-by-step guidance; automation of specific tasks; a secure vault for saving and organizing paperwork; and real-time chats with dedicated Care Managers.

What industry problems are we solving with our partnership for HR teams and/or their employees?

Recent studies have shown that when employees experience bereavement, their employers are significantly affected by reduced productivity, absenteeism, and presenteeism. On average, bereaved families spend an average of 12.5 months resolving financial matters, and they spend a median of 12 hours per week on these tasks, according to Empathy’s Cost of Dying Report, which surveyed 1,485 Americans who had experienced a recent loss.

In addition, loss is often accompanied by physical and emotional symptoms such as anxiety, pain, fatigue, lack of focus, and memory impairment—leading to lower productivity. In fact, 76% of employed respondents to the Cost of Dying survey reported harm to their performance or status at work and 12% reported a decline in reputation.

Employers who provide Empathy’s services as a benefit save bereaved employees and their families time and money while reducing their stress and protecting their mental and physical health. Overall, Empathy’s tools and services save each family an average of 189 hours and over $3,000, giving bereaved employees the time and space to focus on what matters most.

What is one thing your company is doing to innovate your product/offering to change the industry?

As an award-winning, innovative leader in digital health and wellness, Empathy partners with some of the most important, forward-thinking companies, from Fortune 100 organizations to brand new startups, bringing their much-needed support to their employees. Empathy helps them get through the hardest days and weeks of their lives, so they can get back on their feet and back to work.
