We recently sat down to discuss their unique employee benefits and how they support pet health within the benefits industry.
What makes your company unique in the benefits space – what key benefits do you provide to employees?
We’re the world’s first and only “HMO for fur babies” – a pet healthcare membership network offered as an employee benefit. Our Preferred Plan saves employees 20-50% off on all in-house veterinary services. All members also have access to a 24/7 pet helpline powered by whiskerDocs for expert veterinary triage services at any time of day or night.
What industry problems are we solving with our partnership for HR teams and/or their employees?
80% of employees are pet parents, but only 5% of pets are insured – this is because traditional pet insurance either isn’t an option or doesn’t offer value for most people/pets. Pet insurance is full of restrictions, exclusions and gets more expensive as a pet ages. At UPC, all pets are welcome on our program for the same price – regardless of their age, breed or pre-existing conditions. For HR teams, we’ve solved the problem of the endless administration burden for voluntary benefits by integrating directly with ben admin and payroll systems for easy enrollment and automatic monthly deductions for enrolled employees. Membership fees are deducted directly from employees’ paychecks with no extra costs or hidden fees for employers.
What is one thing your company is doing to innovate your product/offering to change the industry?
Our model, while well-established in the human health space, is completely innovative in pet/vet. We pre-negotiate rates with our veterinary partners and give them a monthly stipend for each enrolled pet – this is how we are able to offer incredible value for all pets without any restrictions, denials or fine print. We truly believe this is where the pet insurance industry will inevitably end up – as pet health care has tended to trail human health care. Pets are too important to us (and veterinary expenses too significant) for there not to be disruption in the current model. We are constantly innovating our product to offer more value to both our members and our veterinary partners. This includes the sharing of pet health data between our pet helpline provider and members’ primary vets and offering savings on drop-shipped labs and other key components of pets’ health.
