We recently sat down to discuss their unique employee benefits and how they support whole health and mental/behavioral health within the benefits industry.

What makes your company unique in the benefits space – what key benefits do you provide to employees?

What industry problems are we solving with our partnership for HR teams and/or their employees?

According to the World Health Organization, one in every eight people have a mental health condition, but 85% go untreated. And sadly, the traditional mental health support system is broken. With a lack of available therapists, long waiting lists for therapy sessions, and rising insurance costs, individuals are finding it harder than ever to access affordable, quality mental health support. Those who can access care are often those who can afford to pay out of pocket, further creating inequities and disparities by socioeconomic status.

What is one thing your company is doing to innovate your product/offering to change the industry?

Most solutions still see mental health as a binary — you’re either well or unwell, and if you’re unwell, you should consider therapy. But in reality, this binary doesn’t capture how people experience their own mental health. Within each organization, people can be anywhere along a spectrum of mental health needs, which can evolve at any time. Rather than defaulting to a single care option for everyone, Modern Health supports this entire spectrum of need, offering more care options and areas of support than other competing solutions, emphasizing its commitment to quality mental health care that evolves with an individual’s needs as they change over time.

Innovation around care modalities is much needed in this industry, given the societal issue of mental health care access partly driven by the supply and demand issue around therapists. The American Psychological Association estimates there are just 34 licensed psychologists for every 100,000 people in the U.S., which is clearly not enough. Modern Health provides care for the entire spectrum of needs, which includes therapy but also care for sub-clinical needs, including coaching, group sessions, meditations, and self-serve digital resources. Modern Health’s recent clinical study and peer-reviewed paper showed that 58% of Modern Health members who started care with depressive symptoms experienced clinical recovery after working with a certified coach.

Since the global pandemic, the need for mental health support has spiked dramatically. Modern Health was quick to recognize the pressure the industry was under to support those in need. These group sessions provide a live judgment-free space for individuals to learn, share, and find community on topics that impact their well-being. Modern Health developed Circles as a way to support people, not just members, through major societal and geopolitical challenges that we face on a day-to-day basis, led by therapists and coaches who understand participants’ unique cultural context and community.
